3 October – 2 December 2016
Tamara Weber (b. 1976, United States) has worked since the mid-2000s in photography, film, conceptual, and performance art. Her sensibility is a continuing meditation on formal questions (light, space, figuration, portraiture, temporarily) and on the possibilities of collaboration across disciplines (architecture, visual art, writing, performance). Weber photographs and films figures and objects as either forms of sculpture or visual deconstruction. Weber takes the objects that she captures and continually re-works them or uses them in collaborative projects. Her visual work has been featured in the 2014 Whitney Biennial in the film Good Stock on the Dimension Floor: An Opera, and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery Post-Speculation/wayblackmachine, as well as in museums and galleries internationally.
During her residency, Weber will be collaborating with Annie Seaton. Annie Seaton and Tamara Weber work together as Close Readings, a collaborative project of visually informed investigative research. Close Readings’ recent works explore selective multimedia deconstruction. Their process involves, first, making photographs—then turning those images into xeroxes (or) otherwise altering them. In Singapore and New York, they will be simultaneously and asynchronously researching in various media. Through a collaborative process of visual and text-based interaction, Annie and Tamara will create book-like objects that will serve as blueprints for further work.
Residencies OPEN offers a rare insight into the often introverted sphere of the artists’ studio. Through showcasing discussions, performances, research and works-in-progress, Residencies:OPEN profiles the diversity of contemporary art practice and the divergent ways artists conceive artwork with the studio as a constant space for experimentation and research.
This edition of Residencies OPEN features video installations and several book-related projects. Participants include Artists-in-Residence Heman Chong (Singapore), Ho Rui An (Singapore), Arin Rungjang (Thailand), SHIMURAbros (Japan/Germany), and Tamara Weber (United States).
