About
Ise’s (b. 1972, Malaysia) work includes installations, publications, animations, collages, participatory events, and the artist space Parking Project (run out of his apartment in Kuala Lumpur). This practice is informed by expressions of popular culture such as comics and graffiti and the manner in which they serve to represent alternative histories of place and culture. Whatever final form it takes, Ise’s work is always participatory, embedded in conversation, friendship and the experiences of simply living life amongst a multitude of communities internationally. Ise is a graduate of Mara University of Technology in Selangor, Malaysia. Selected exhibitions and Biennials and Residencies include: Singapore Biennale (2011); Asia Triennial Manchester, United Kingdom (2011); Jakarta Biennale with Indonesian collaborative Ruangrupa (2009) Artist-in-Residence at Artspace Visual Arts Centre, Sydney (2006) and the 9th Istanbul Biennial (2005); He is the co-founder of Sentap, a quarterly art publication in Malaysia.
Focus
Ise’s practice is informed by expressions of popular culture such as comics and graffiti and the manner in which they serve to represent alternative histories of place and culture. He works closely with various communities and will explore the relationship between Malaysian and Singaporean communities.
True to his existing practice, during his time as an Artist-in-Residence, Ise will note take through drawing and create a series of events utilising food as a social binder whilst also going deeper into its layered histories and how this connects to Southeast Asia.

Yee I-Lann and Ise are Artists-in-Residence who have a material based approach through
the use of photography, drawing, printing and food in their work and use research methods of
oral history and storytelling in their gathering of material. Join these two artists in an open studio format where they will use their narrative interviewing techniques in conversation with
each other, offering a glimpse into their studios with new drawings inspired by local ink painting techniques as well as a makeshift batik printing station.
Yee I-Lann’s practice links history, landscape,memory, and cultural identity via allusion to historical, popular, and everyday references often through the medium of photography. She was one of the co-curators of the Singapore Biennale (2013) and has exhibited as part of the Asia Pacific Triennial (1999).Ise’s work is always participatory, embedded in conversation, friendship and the experiences of simply living life among a multitude of communities internationally. Exhibitions include the Singapore Biennale (2011), Jakarta Biennale (2009) and the 9th Istanbul Biennia (2005) with the Indonesian collective, Ruangrupa.
