Simryn Gill: Hugging the Shore
Simryn Gill’s first major solo exhibition in Southeast Asia brings together a series of works that reveal the artist’s specific attitude towards how we produce meaning and make a place for ourselves in the world. NTU CCA Singapore will present three photographic series: Standing Still (2000- 03), Dalam (2001), May 2006 (2006), and a new work, Like Leaves (Syzygium grandis) (2015). Much of Simryn Gill’s work results from a process of sifting through and documenting her immediate surroundings creating quiet and at the same time commanding work marked by history, culture, the passage of time, and the poetry of daily life.

Simryn Gill quizzes eminent art historian, T.K. Sabapathy whose art historical scholarship is found in the studying of the great Asian art traditions of India, China and Southeast Asia. Yet his research and extensive publications are in modern art in South and Southeast Asia. The talk deals with this and with many other matters.
T.K. Sabapathy is an eminent art historian, curator and critic, a lecturer in the history of Southeast Asian Art, and a Research Fellow at NTU CCA Singapore.

Lee Weng Choy and Simryn Gill will converse about “the address of art”, both in the sense of how art addresses or speaks to us and the larger world, and also in terms of how art locates us.
Lee Weng Choy is a writer and art critic, and the president of the Singapore Section of the International Association of Art Critics. Lee has collaborated with the NTU CCA Singapore on various projects.

Beginning with the Dalam series as a preface to Simryn Gill’s meditation on the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (Guide to the Murals at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, Singapore) and its defunct Station Hotel — two interlinked book artworks of the artist — Lilian Chee will discuss the modes of encounter with architecture and space through Gill’s practice.
Lilian Chee is a writer, theorist and designer, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore.

Lai Chee Kien researches on histories of art, architecture, settlements, urbanism, and landscapes in Southeast Asia. His publications include A Brief History of Malayan Art (1999), Building Merdeka: Independence Architecture in Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1966 (2007) and Cords to Histories (2013). He is also a registered architect in Singapore.
